About Doves
There are two species of Doves which are becoming quite
popular in aviaries and as pet birds; the Ringneck (Barbary) Dove and
the Diamond Dove.
Ringneck Doves (Streptopelia Risoria)
are tame, hardy and prolific birds that are a good choice for the first-time bird keeper. They have
more than 30 color mutations, with the common mutations available at many
pet stores or from breeders. Measuring about 10 inches long,
Ringneck Doves are best kept in individual
pairs, or a minimum of 10 square feet for two pairs. They eat
small grains, such as a cockatiel mix seed/wild bird seed.
Keep their aviary dry, draft-free and make sure they have
plenty of sunshine and fresh water.
The Diamond Dove (Geopelia Cuneata), is also
a great choice for the beginning bird keeper. Small birds
measuring just 8
inches long, 4 inches of which is its tail, this dove is both
affordable and beautiful. Although they can be kept in a good-sized cockatiel
cage, they are best kept in a large planted aviary, about 10
by 4 by 6 feet. Diamond doves can be fed a finch seed mix,
leafy vegetables and soft food, such as hard-boiled eggs,
bread crumbs and cooked rice. Provide them with fresh water
daily.
Doves are not shrill, but they do make a cooing noise that
if kept outside and could bother neighbors that live close by.
As with all pet birds, it is important to be aware of
the responsibilities that go along with ownership. Be sure to visit
the Pet Bird
Bookstore for owner's guides to a variety of wonderful pet birds.
